SA Cultural Observatory exploring the Impact of Artificial Intelligence on South Africa's Cultural and Creative Industries Workshop

The advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has sparked intense debate about its potential to transform the cultural and creative industries (CCIs) in South Africa. A recent research study conducted between October 2023 and July 2024 sought to answer the question: Is AI a rushed revolution or a holy creative grail?

The study's findings reveal that AI is both a rushed revolution and a renaissance, enabling new and unimagined expression and speed for most creative workers. However, concerns about job displacement, skills development, intellectual property rights, and biases in AI algorithms cannot be ignored.

The South African Cultural Observatory invites you to discuss the challenges and opportunities posed by AI in the CCIs. Key topics to be explored include:

  • The Protection-Innovation-Remuneration Continuum: A framework for policy decision-making
  • Promoting inclusivity and diversity in AI training datasets
  • Addressing copyright and intellectual property issues
  •  Nurturing collaboration between stakeholders
  • Digital literacy and AI skills development
  • Investment in data infrastructure
  • Establishment of multi-stakeholder advisory councils

The workshop aims to foster collaboration, dialogue, and ongoing research to navigate the evolving landscape of AI in the CCIs. By implementing proactive policies and initiatives, South Africa can create an environment that supports innovation while protecting creators' rights.

Join the conversation and shape the future of AI in South Africa's CCIs.
