Amílcar Patel is a creative practitioner whose work interrogates the intersections of technology, culture and speculative African futures. As the founder of KAMVA Collective, a cultural production house dedicated to cross-media storytelling, Patel’s focus is on reimagining African narratives and potential futures through the lens of emergent technologies and human first frameworks. Patel’s current research project, Africa AI, a feature-length documentary critically examines the socio-political and ethical implications of emergent technology in an African context. This work has garnered significant industry recognition, including the Red Sea Development Fund Award (2024) and the DOK Leipzig Accelerator Award (2024), with a nomination for Best Documentary Project by the Saxon State Ministry for Science and Culture in Germany. Her output extends to curatorial projects, where she has explored themes of land, memory, and dispossession in collaboration with Google Arts & Culture and the global dynamics of gentrification and spatial apartheid across three continents in the critically acclaimed documentary Not in My Neighborhood (co-producer). Patel has a background in Law, Political Science and Ethics and AI Policy in Africa from the University of Cape Town, a Bachelor of Arts in Motion Picture Directing and Producing and is a Digital Creative Intermediary through University of Witwatersrand. Patel’s films have been exhibited at internationally renowned institutions such as the London and Dublin Museum of Modern Art and Q21 in Vienna, reflecting her commitment to bridging social inquiry with public engagement.
