Azwinndini Muronga

Professor Azwinndini Muronga is a theoretical physicist and senior academic leader, currently serving as Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation, and Internationalisation at Nelson Mandela University. He holds a PhD in Physics from the University of Minnesota, an MSc and BSc Honours in Theoretical Physics from the University of Cape Town, and a BSc(Mathematics and Physics) from the University of Venda. Azwinndini's own research field lies at the intersection of nuclear physics, particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology. He studies the nature and properties of matter under extreme conditions in heavy ion collisions and astrophysical environments. His recent research interests include complexity science and transdisciplinary approaches to addressing 21st- century global challenges through the integration of diverse knowledge systems. Prior to his appointment as DVC: RII in October 2024, Professor Muronga served as Executive Dean of the Faculty of Science and as Director of the UJ Soweto Science Centre. He is a passionate science educator and advocate for scientific development in Africa. He plays a leading role in coordinating regional collaboration through the Southern Africa Physics Network (SAPhysNet), which aims to strengthen physics capacity across the region. He has also served on numerous national and international science bodies, including the boards of SANSA, SACNASP, and NITheCS, and held leadership roles in the South African Institute of Physics and the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics. His current portfolio drives Nelson Mandela University’s Vision 2030 priorities through high-impact research, transdisciplinary collaboration, innovation ecosystems, and Africa- centred global partnerships.
