Cynthia Khumalo

Dr Cynthia Ntombifuthi Khumalo is a highly accomplished executive with extensive experience in public administration, corporate governance, and organisational leadership across government, tourism, and cultural sectors. She currently serves as the Director General for the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture in KwaZulu-Natal, a position she has held since August 2025, having previously been Deputy Director General from 2020 to 2025. Dr Khumalo’s career spans over three decades, beginning in education as a high school educator and progressing through leadership roles in provincial departments, including Human Resources Development, Arts, Culture and Tourism, and State-Owned Enterprises. She has held executive positions as CEO of UShaka Marine World and the KZN Liquor Authority, and has served as Head of Department and Chief Director in various government departments, where she led strategic, operational, and policy initiatives. Her academic credentials are equally distinguished, including a Doctorate in Business Administration from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, with research focused on corporate governance in Schedule 3 State-Owned Enterprises. She also holds an MBA, a Bachelor of Science, a Bachelor of Education (First Class), diplomas in Human Resource Management and Computer Literacy, and a Certificate in Executive and Management Coaching from the University of Cape Town. Dr Khumalo has contributed to the governance of numerous boards, including KZN Tourism Authority, KZN Sharks Board, FEDHASA-KZN, Music House KZN, and KZN Liquor Authority, where she chaired the HR and Remuneration Committee. She is also an academic mentor, co-supervising master’s and doctorate students at Durban University of Technology. Her leadership has been recognised through awards such as the KZN Business Women’s Association Business Achiever Award (2016) and the iGagasi FM SHERO Award for Public Service (2018). Dr Khumalo is known for her strategic vision, governance expertise, and commitment to developing high-performing teams in both public and corporate spheres.
