Steven Joseph Sack
I was born in 1951 and have lived my entire life in Johannesburg. I am now also based in Cape Town.
Since graduating from Wits and Unisa with a BAFA and HED degree, in the 1970s, I have worked in the arts, theatre, community development, secondary and tertiary education, museum curatorship, public cultural policy, institutional development and administration, as a senior Manager in Government and most recently as the CEO of the Origins Centre at the University of Witwatersrand.
In 1988 I curated the watershed exhibition, The Neglected Tradition, Towards a new history of South African Art (1930 - 1988), an early attempt at a history of black South African art, at the Johannesburg Art Gallery.
I now work as an artist, independent consultant and curator. Current consultancies have been: the development of exhibitions for the new National Museum of Lesotho; Mapping the South African Cultural and Creative Entrepreneurial Ecosystem on behalf of the GIZ and Goethe Institute; an evaluation and strategy for the Digital Gaming and Animation Industries on behalf of Tshimologong, Wits University and other partners and assembling and researching two archives – the People’s Parks archive, and the Junction Avenue Theatre Company archive.
I have recently curated, with Dijondesign, a virtual exhibition for the Iziko Museum, on the sculptural works of the Lesotho artist, Samuele Makoanyane. It is called Ke Liha Pene. I Lay Down My Pen.
I have spent the past three years researching the history of the Basotho Heritage Blankets, for the yet to open Lesotho National Museum and Art Gallery in Maseru.
I make sculpture in wood and a variety of other materials.
