THE British Museum in London is hosting an exhibition on South Africa's rich history and heritage from 27 October 2016 - 26 February 2017. The "South Africa: the art of a nation” exhibition highlights the country’s deep history, the colonial period, apartheid, the birth of the rainbow nation and South Africa today through art.
Despite the colonial history between South Africa and Britain, the exhibition has been described as being informative and well curated, offering new and surprising insights even for a South African audience. The exhibition constantly calls attention to such controversial issues within the Western canon and how they influenced views of Southern African art and culture, pointing out bias behind the empty land myth. Each work of art is contextualised and analysed with a view to interrogate the context it was created in, as well as how it is viewed in the context of the present. the British Museum’s collection from South Africa is displayed alongside contemporary acquisitions.
