AFTER the winter break Fidelio Trio, a virtuoso ensemble from Ireland, will start the second half of the Johannesburg Musical Society’s year on Sunday 27 August at 17.00
Fidelio Trio is an enthusiastic proponent of ‘new’ music as well as of the standard repertoire, thus performing an extremely wide repertoire, it comprises of Darragh Morgan (violin), Mary Dullea (piano) and Adi Tal (cello), three superb instrumentalists who each excel as collaborative musicians. The trio, which plays at important venues and festivals throughout Europe, has also toured America and the Far East. Last year, they were shortlisted for the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society Music Awards.
Their concert on Sunday 27 August in the Linder Auditorium on the Wits Education Campus, St Andrews Road, Parktown, promises to be a vibrant exposition of fine playing. Booking is at Computicket, or tickets can be bought at the door from 16.00 onwards on the day. Please note that there is no credit card facility at the Linder box office. Sporting events are more than moments of competition, national pride, and entertainment. They are economic activities that can stimulate tourism, create employment, support local businesses, and generate revenue across multiple sectors of the economy.
Umntwana womgquba a term traditionally used in the Nguni language that means “born out of wedlock,” but nowadays it is used to emphasise that one is born kwisintu. As lontwana, I look back on my own adventures: sometimes I pat myself on the back, and sometimes I wish I could redo them.
Each September, South Africa turns its attention to the rich cultural tapestry that defines our nation. Heritage Month is a time to honour the traditions, languages, histories, knowledge systems, customs and creative expressions that have been passed from generation to generation, while recognising that our heritage is not confined to the past.
