Media Statement: Impact Assessment of COVID-19 on the Industry

BY 29.03.20

All industries across the globe are currently fully engaged in discussions about and considering the economic impact of Covid-19 (widely known as the Coronavirus). Not a single industry has been spared nor was prepared for this pandemic. The SA cultural and creative industries sector is no exception. To come to grips with the impact in our industry, the SA Cultural Observatory will as of this week be conducting an online survey amongst the various creative and cultural businesses and practitioners. The aim of the survey is an early assessment to find out how the Covid-19 (popularly known as Coronavirus) is affecting the sector currently. A more detailed study of the longer-term impact is planned for the future.

As with all our work, the survey is designed to cover views from key businesses/freelancers from the various cultural domains as per the United Nations framework. The UN framework outlines the following as the key cultural domains:

  1. Cultural and Natural Heritage
  2. Performance and Celebration
  3. Visual Arts and Crafts
  4. Books and Press
  5. Audio-Visual and Interactive Media
  6. Design and Creative Services

We would like to invite as many businesses and freelancers involved in the industry to participate in the online survey.
