IT'S appropriate this month to spend some time thinking about freedom – and freedom in the arts in particular. When considering this, many debates centre on creative freedom, or the extent to which an artist has freedom to produce works that offer up their viewpoint on subject matter. While this is certainly critical in an artist’s life, there are many other freedoms that need to be in place before an artist can manifest creative work that does that.
UNITED KINGDOM: The online art market is proving resilient compared to the downward trend in the wider art market, which in 2015 saw a decline in reported sales. According to a study released by Hiscox fine art insurers on 19 April, the online art market grew by 24% to $3.27bn. The study shows that the majority of the online art transactions still take place at $10,000 or less, suggesting the lower end of the art market has been less affected by the global slowdown than the top and middle tiers.
The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) council has announced a call for nominations for individuals to serve as members on the foundation’s Advisory Panel. The Advisory Panel members will fulfil the statutory role to advise the council on the merits of applications for grants and on any matter relating to South African film/television/electronic/media or any other related field which the council deems essential.
