Overview

This report explores the role of CCIs and Sports in the eight Metros in South Africa. The analysis at metro level is important to support the development of the industries at ground roots level and assist in the development of policy that is appropriate to the local conditions. Literature on creative economy and regional factors shows that understanding the physical aspects of a place is important to the development of the sector role of local factors that determine the development of the sector. It is in this regard that emphasis is given to the understanding of the metropolitan cultural economies, as a first step to developing successful and sustainable regional cultural policy.

This section summarises the economic contribution of the eight metros to the creative and sports industry. The economic contribution is measured in GVA, employment and international trade.

The outcome of the analysis shows that the top performing metros are located in the top performing provinces (Gauteng, Western Cape and eThekwini). City of Johannesburg is the best performing metro in terms of GVA, job creation and imports. Gauteng metros (CoJ, CoE and CoT) collectively account for over half of the contributions made by all the metros, except for exports of cultural and sporting goods, where they contribute 38%.

The City of Cape Town ranks second, except on the exports of cultural and sporting goods, where it ranks first. The CoCT contributes about 50% of all exports by the metros and accounts for about 20% of GVA, employment and imports contributed by all the metros.

The least perfuming metros are Nelson Mandela Bay, Mangaung and Buffalo City. Their performance also mirrors that of the provinces in which they are located. Mangaung performance better in terms of jobs created, compared to Nelson Mandela Bay and Buffalo City. However, Nelson Mandela Bay has more exports and imports and is also marginally higher on GVA.
