Research Agenda for the Creative and Sports Economy 2023 – 2024 Draft

Overview

The purpose of this Research Agenda is to define and focus research efforts and resources towards achieving outputs that would enhance the development of the Arts, Heritage, Cultural and Sport Sectors in South Africa as well as the policy imperatives of the South African Government and its stakeholders.

The creative and sports economy can be defined as an evolving concept based on creative assets potentially generating economic growth and development:

• It can foster income generation, job creation and expert earnings while promoting social cohesion, cultural diversity and human development.
• It embraces economic, cultural and social aspects interacting with technology, intellectual property and tourism objectives.
• It is a set of knowledge-based economic activities with a development dimension and cross-cutting linkages at macro and micro levels to the overall economy.
• It is a feasible development option calling for innovative, multidisciplinary policy responses and inter-ministerial action

The Research Agenda should be treated as a document that is – dynamic –ongoing work-in-progress, – continuously subjected to review – updating as new data and challenges emerge. This Research Agenda has been developed through several consultations starting in 2015 between with the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture, the South African Cultural Observatory, industry stakeholders and researchers.

The RA therefore aims to:

• define research requirements;
• define individual research agenda items required to address research requirements; and
• determine the alignment of proposed research agenda items with the strategic and policy imperatives of the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture (DSAC).

Research Agenda items may fall within in the scope of the Cultural Observatory, the scope of DSAC, other organs of state, civil society, tertiary and private sector entities.
