Overview

The Indlamlenze Development Foundation organised for the first time the 2019 uMaskandi Festival which was held on the 30 March at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban/ eThekwini Municipality, KwaZulu-Natal. The main aim of the Festival was to showcase maskandi music nationally and internationally.

The findings reveal that most of the attendees were from KwaZuluNatal (mainly from within the Durban/ eThekwini Municipality area). Mostly African males were in attendance from diverse income groups and educational backgrounds, with most attendees having completed secondary schooling.

The Festival attracted approximately 30 000 audience attendees, 1 200 participants, 90 media persons and 200 support crew. All attendees were South Africans Additionally, 11 778 visitors attended the event from outside Durban/ eThekwini Municipality. Most of the attendees had previously attended events such as the uMaskandi Festival which indicates a demand for this type of music cultural event. Furthermore, almost all attendees came to the location and visited Durban/ eThekwini Municipality specifically for the Festival.

Hosting the Festival also led to the organisers employing and additional 9 permanent and 94 casual/ temporary persons. Furthermore, 100 volunteers were recruited who assisted with the event. Sponsorship was mainly from government departments, including DAC. The main expenditure items were capital expenditure, venue hire and advertising and marketing.

The levels of satisfaction with the uMaskandi Festival was high among attendees and the organiser of the event. There was specifically positive associations among the attendees and organiser that the uMaskandi Festival contributes to increasing awareness of culture, enhances cultural pride and has cultural entertainment value.

The economic impact analysis showed that the 2019 uMaskandi Festival had an economic impact of between R19 386 807 and R25 434 602 on the economy of Durban/ eThekwini Municipality. This is substantial for a one-day event.
