Read MoreThe South African Cultural Observatory invites you to attend a Dissemination Workshop. Despite the growing interest in the contribution of the cultural and creative industries (CCIs) to growth and job creation in South Africa, innovation is still mostly focused on STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) sectors. There is currently little research on how digital technology has influenced innovation, particularly in the increasingly evident overlaps between the digital and creative sectors, and how such firms create, use and protect their intellectual property. This research examines the nexus between digital technologies, innovation, intellectual property, and diversity in the cultural and creative industries (CCIs) drawing on two SACO reports: An analysis of the SA gaming and animation sector; and data from a cluster of CCI firms in Cape Town that combine digital technology with creative inputs to produce goods and services. In late March, soon after President Ramaphosa announced several measures to curtail the spread of the coronavirus in the country, the South African Cultural Observatory undertook a study to evaluate the impact of Covid-19 and associated measures on the cultural and creative industries (CCIs). This took the form of both the online survey and economic data analysis to find out what impact the measures were having on businesses and freelancers in the Cultural and Creative Industries (CCIs), the adaptation strategies that the sector was using, and the most useful kinds of support that could be provided. The survey ran from the 30th of March to the 4th of May 2020, and thus provides an early assessment of the impact of the shutdown on the sector.
